Junior golfers are the next wave of athletes so it’s important for them to get off on the right foot during development. But far too many times I see junior golfers come to classes with equipment that is too long or heavy for them to use.

Many parents think their child will grow into the set or think it’s too expensive to get a new set every year. But it’s highly likely your child will become frustrated and disappointed with golf if they play with clubs that are too long, stiff or cumbersome. Because they’ll constantly have to manipulate their grip, stance or swing with improper equipment, junior golfers will have difficulty hitting the same spot on the clubface, which often results in sprayed shots and a lack of confidence.

That’s why I like companies such as U.S. Kids Golf, which has nine club set sizes for juniors. A fun way to show kids where they hit the ball is to spray foot powder on the clubface. After they get in a good setup position and swing smoothly, check the face of the club to see where the ball mark is. If it’s in the center, the contact was good and the club is likely the correct length for them.

For a junior player, a driver’s length should stop 2 inches above their belly button or be two-thirds of their height. With the right clubs and coaching that includes swings on the range and games on the course, your child will see that golf is a fun game they can experience for many years to come.
