If you’ve been told that you cast, pre-release or even chop the clubhead into the ball you likely lose the shaft angle before making contact.
Although there are several causes for this compensation, a typical one I see is an inactive body rotation that leads to the hands and arms taking on a new role in the swing. These players typically lose their overall structure and are the ones who fall victim to the motion.
A good drill to get the correct feeling requires a club and an alignment stick:
Grip the club as you normally would and use the alignment stick as an extension of the grip.
Rotate your body back and through several times in a fluid swinging motion. If your hands are overactive, the alignment rod will hit you on the front side.
Do this drill while addressing a golf ball so you get used to the positions you’re pursuing while in your golf posture.
