The sensation of skipping stones on the water can lead to better mechanics and a smoother motion.

The image or feeling of skipping stones can help clear your lead hip and produce an inside-out swing path that eliminates slices and leads to more power.

To get this sensation, take a golf ball in your right hand, bring it to the top of where your backswing ends and flick it forward at the impact position like you were skipping a stone on a lake. Feel how your lead hip clears as your arms drop quietly into a position to comfortably deliver the club from the inside.

If your hips don’t clear, your arms have no choice but to travel around the body from outside to inside, which typically results in a slice or pull. That makes beginning the downswing with your lower body and allowing your arms to find the slot essential.

For people with tight hips or previous back or hip injuries, flare one or both of your feet to allow for an easier hip turn.
