Some of the best short game players use a putting stroke when chipping from the fringe. If you have a tough time getting the ball close to the hole from this distance, this method could be for you, but it takes practice. Try this setup and experiment with clubs to see what works best for you.

Assume a putting stroke by leveling your shoulders, standing taller and narrowing your stance.

Grip down on a longer club (start with a 7-iron), bring the butt end of the grip close to your body and point the shaft toward your chest. Work on aligning the shaft with your leading forearm.

Hold the club in your palms, not the fingers, so your big muscles control the movement.

Set up with 75 percent of your weight on the front foot and keep it there for throughout the motion.
