Building a swing from the ground up is gaining traction, and BodiTrak Sports has a technology that uses a smart fabric the size of a doormat to read how golfers apply pressure to the ground. Custom algorithms read the shift change during the swing to provide calibrated force values that can be interpreted by you and/or an instructor.

At least two Orange County teachers use BodiTrak in their lessons: Geoff Murtha at Dove Canyon and Tim Mitchell at Pelican Hill. Here’s why they like the system:

MURTHA: It’s important to understand how a golfer’s interaction with the ground can affect what the rest of the body is doing during the swing. With the evolution of teaching tools such as BodiTrak we can gain a greater understanding of ground mechanics and explain ground reaction forces during weight transfers to create maximum velocity at the right moment.

The system also allows me to create benchmarks for a player’s ideal motion after their best results, and data can also show a Tour player’s balanced impact position from heel to toe to get a clear picture of the ultimate goal. The information is easy to understand and provides instant feedback, and the system can also be integrated with V1Pro and Flightscope.

If you’re unfamiliar with BodiTrak, I recommend a session, as it will get you on the fast track toward understanding your optimal body motion, from the ground up.

MITCHELL: BodiTrak is similar to an X-ray or MRI in that it measures something our eyes can’t readily see or understand. Its ability to measure balance has helped my students understand multiple facets of their games – most importantly how balance can affect their ability to turn properly and how balance affects the shape of their swing.

For example, if your balance is too heel oriented on your downswing, the club and your arms often must swing more in front of your body – or over the top – to counterbalance that motion. In addition to helping with that flaw, BodiTrak has the ability to measure your lateral center of pressure by quantifying a golfer’s Peak Velocity, the first step in a golfer’s kinematic sequence. If a golfer’s Peak Velocity is too slow, the domino effect of the remaining segments of the sequence is also slow, which affects clubhead speed and distance. BodiTrak can also measure a golfer’s ability to brace his or her lateral motion with the driver for a more ascending blow and greater carry distance.

The BodiTrak’s ability to illustrate and quantify elements that our eyes have a difficult time seeing has really enhanced my students’ games.
